Essential Services

Essential services are public health activities that should be taken in every community. Administration of the Wasatch County Health Department (WCHD) is organized to ensure that essential services are provided by WCHD. In 1994, the Core Public Health Functions Steering Committee identified 10 Essential Public Health Services (see below). This committee included representatives from US Public Health Service agencies and other public health organizations.

10 Essential Public Health Services

The 10 Essential Public Health Services are to:

  • Monitor community health status to identify and solve problems;

  • Diagnose and investigate health problems and hazards in the community;

  • Inform, educate, and empower the people about health issues;

  • Mobilize community partnerships to identify and solve health problems;

  • Develop policies that support public health;

  • Enforce laws and regulations to protect health and ensure safety;

  • Link people to personal health services;

  • Assure a competent public health work force;

  • Evaluate the effectiveness of public health services in our community; and

  • Research for new insights and innovative solutions to health problems.
