Onsite Wastewater Septic Systems

Wasatch County's Wastewater program is designed to help protect public health and environmental quality by ensuring the proper and effective disposal of onsite wastewater from structures not directly connected to a public sewer system. Our goal is to provide property owners with information regarding the proper location, installation and maintenance of an onsite wastewater system. WCHD maintains many "as built" parcel drawing for those residents who cannot connect to the sewer system. However, not all sites are availabe on record, for those sites the Health Department offers electonic detections service for $85.

In addition, we conduct site assessments for all new proposed systems, permit all new and replacement systems, review septic designs and inspect all system installations to ensure public health is protected with as minimal impact on the environment as possible, and in compliance to all applicable regulations.

Alternative Septic Systems

The Wasatch County Board of Health has approved the use of three categories of Alternatvie Onsite Wastewater systems: At-grade, Mound, and Packed Bed Filter Media. These alternative systems allow for the installation of a wastewater disposal system where there are issues regarding separation to groundwater or bedrock, distances to water features, limited size of absorption field area, slow PERCOLATING SOIL, and some may be used with drip irrigation technology.

These specialized incur additional costs and monitoring to assure that these systems perform as designed. Some systems will require an annual permit, sampling, additional inspections during installation and during operation as well as a contract with an operation and maintenance provider; all of which increases the cost of these systems. Contact a State Certified Level III Onsite Wastewater provider to help determine which system will work best for you

Onsite Wastewater Permits

Wasatch County Health Department requires a wastewater permit for all new septic systems and replacement of failing systems to help protect public health and the environment, and assure compliance to all applicable regulations. The attaining of a wastewater permit is one of the first steps towards obtaining a Wasatch County Building Permit.
